SPECTORS stands for “Sensor Products for Enterprises Creating Technological Opportunities in airborne Remote Sensing” and is active from September 2016 to December 2020. The Dutch-German cooperation project is funded by INTERREG V-A Deutschland-Nederland. It is a strategic initiative in High-Tech Systems and Materials focusing on ground based as well as airborne remote sensing technology. The main goal of this project is to develop and test innovative hard- and software solutions as well as services on top of the technology to enhance the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises. More than 31 partners from business, academia and public sector are collaborating for 4 years to achieve novel products and services. The total fundable costs of SPECTORS amounts to approximately 9.8 Mio €.

SPECTORS Blog: Advanced Radar Surveillance
IMST (D) and OBTRASEC (Nl) are cooperation partners in the SPECTORS project. They work together in work-package “Advanced Radar Surveillance for Safety Relevant Areas” on the development of an innovative safety system for intruder detection and tracking. The system is a combination of radar and video surveillance. When compared with the traditional camera systems, radar has its advantage especially in public places where the personal rights of pedestrians should be respected. In addition to providing privacy, the radar module is also weather and light independent. The radar module sR-1200e is applied for this system. This radar has CE marking and IP65 protection. The firmware for intruder detection and tracking is optimized for this application. IMST and OBTRASEC finalized firmware and hardware and started first pilot production. The new security setup is installed at several test sites for long-term false alarm measurements and optimization.
Test Site “IMST”: 4 radar modules are installed at IMST’s company building for surveillance of the backyard and the back entrance. People coming from the car park are detected and tracked by the radar modules, which are directed at different sectors. The entire observation area is 0 to 50 meters and -90° to + 90° along the wall of the building. All radar modules and the PTZ camera, which is installed at the same building but at another position, are connected to the local area network (LAN) and get DC supply from Power-over-Ethernet (PoE). If a target is detected, the camera will pan and zoom to the coordinates which are derived from the radar modules. A computer within the network controls the radar modules and the camera(s) and is able to record data and to initiate an alarm.

Test Site “Helmond-1”: Radar and video surveillance of the entrance area of a company building. The street and the public sidewalk on the left side are hidden (marked in grey) to avoid detections from that areas.

Test Site “Helmond-2”: Radar and video surveillance at the corner of a warehouse. The forefront of the building corner is covered with radar and video at an angle of 270 degrees. Opposite areas were faded out to prevent false alarms from there.
